Well, talented family members have been at the old book writing lark again and this time it's Vidyamala Burch, Pippas sister and another of Bobs lovely daughters.

Living Well with Pain & Illness - The Mindful Way the Free Yourself From Suffering
Vidyamala Burch

$45.00
Piatkus Books, United Kingdom, 2008. NEW Paperback 255 pages with many illustrations.

Vidyamala Burch has suffered with chronic pain for over 30 years due to congenital weakness, a car accident and unsuccessful surgery. She is now a wheelchair user. In this positive and reassuring new book, she identifies that it is our resistance to pain which causes it to be so distressing and miserable. We don't want it to be happening to us, and we wish we weren't experiencing it.

Living Well with Pain & Illness is a practical guide to living with and managing chronic pain through the principle of mindfulness. By developing a calm awareness of your body and your pain, you can learn to let go of the frustration and suffering that you associate the pain with, and the pain will reduce. Vidyamala Burch uses easy-to follow breathing techniques and powerful mindfulness meditations which teach you how to live in the present moment. Living Well with Pain & Illness includes helpful illustrations, offers effective ways of managing chronic pain and is a must-read for all sufferers.

About the Author
Vidyamala Burch is the co-founder of the well-respected Breathworks organisation (http://www.breathworks-mindfulness.co.uk) She has taught meditation for 12 years as a member of the Western Buddhist Order.

Chairman Miaow16 October 2006
The Thoughts of Chairman Miaow
by Andrew Davies $10.00

(Robson Books, 2005 Hardback)
ISBN 1-86105-846-2
Arty Bees book # 61582 and # 35455

"Join Chairman Miaow and his kitten comrades as they try to make the Great Leap Forward.

Combines genuine Communist Party posters from the People's Republic with specially commissioned artwork to create a subtle blend of radical sloganeering and ickle wickle pussycats.

Discover for the first time Miaow's radical views on imperialism, feudalism, capitalism and squeaky mice.

You too can support Miaow's work and ensure that the evil imperialist forces of President Woof are banished from the stage of world history by buying this book.
And, most importantly, waving it around a lot."

This is the perfect (dare I say it, it is after all only October) Christmas Stocking filler. (Ok. So I said the dreaded 'C' word, sorry.)

Actually it really is the perfect present for the art loving, cat loving, dog hating, communist/socialist cynic in your life - and I know we all have one of those hidden somewhere in all our families.
And surely it would be better to have them chuckling in the corner at such gems as "Any proper party needs two crates of catnip and some fit kitties." then grumbling under their breath about W.M.D.'s, imperialism and bourgeois royalty blue rinses and spoiling the Queen's nice Christmas message. (Dang, said it again! Sorry)

We got a couple of these in 18 months ago, and have sold hundreds since then. Literally. This is one of our best selling titles of the last two years, so the hundreds of peasant workers of Wellington and beyond (you know who you are) can't be wrong!

Dan Brown move aside, it's obvious the masses have an inexhaustible enthusiasm for socialism and rabbit flavoured catlick!

The Spiderwick Chronicles (Boxed set including all five volumes: The Field Guide, The Seeing Stone, Lucinda's Secret, The Ironwood Tree & The Wrath of Mulgarath) by Holly Black and illustrated by Tony Di Terlizza. $70.00
(Simon & Schulster, 2005 Hardbacks)
ISBN 0-689-04034-2

So you've read the Harry Potter to the rug rats and now they are clamoring for more.

Ahh, dilemma of dilemmas, what to do...
Well, if they want something to read themselves, but aren't quite up to the reading level of Mr Potter Esq., the Baudelaire Orphans of Lemony Snicket or the infamous antics of Artimus Fowl, 12 year old criminal mastermind, then The Spiderwick Chronicles could be the answer.

The volumes follow the adventures of the Grace children, 9 year old twins Jared and Simon and their older sister Mallory after they move to live into their elderly (and apparently insane) Great Aunt Lucinda's house in the country.
It's in the run down house that Jared finds a field guide of a very unusual nature written by the mysterious Arthur Spiderwick which details the creatures, weird and wonderful that live under our very noses, if only we knew what to look for.

It's essentially one story, broken up into five episodes for bite size reading sessions, but the story flows nicely, the characters are likable and relevant to children, both boys and girls, and the illustrations throughout the five volumes (in colour plates and black & white line drawings within the text) are beautiful and add to the pleasure of reading the books.

In fact the quality of the books are beautiful - bound in a similar fashion to the Lemony Snicket Series of Unfortunate Events in small hardback editions with old fashioned rough cut page edging. The books feel real, like shiny versions of something you might inherit from Nana, adding to the illusion of the story itself, that this is something real, something secret you've stumbled across, just like Jared did in the attic.

And then as a delicious side dish there is also the Field Guide itself.
Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You
is a feast of stunning illustration, reminiscent of another classic children's book, Dinotopia except personally I think the art here is better, even if the created world is simpler and a bit more traditional.

There are 121 pages including quite a few foldout pages and the accompanying text includes a lot of very useful information.
Like how not to get turned into stone by a basilisk, or how to avoid having your children stolen by faerie's and replaced with changelings.
And if you are a fantasy art fan, it stands alone without having to read the Chronicles, you can just sit back and oogle the art of the magnificent Tony DiTrelizza.

Full colour fold-out page from Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You, featuring the Cockatrice (Family: Serpentigentidae) or Common Basilisk.

FYI - Don't look the Cockatrice in the eye if you have plans for the weekend. Or in fact if you have any plans that don't involve standing around for a very long time in one place.
