Arty Bees Publications — Terawhiti

2003 was a landmark year for Arty Bees.
As well as our fifteenth anniversary, our first year in the new Manners Street location and Bob's 80th birthday, we published our first book.

Bob & Judith have both been involved with some of the local historical societies for many years. Judith, as the current president of the Karori Historical Society, has been involved in the editing of a couple small publications, (including co-writing one) so it wasn't really a surprise when they decided to make their first venture into the heady world of publishing with a history of Wellington's south coast.

Sorry this title is now out of print but we do get second hand copies through - ask us on our Query page.

Terawhiti

The history of any farming station in New Zealand also represents the social history of New Zealand itself.

Farming was, and for many still is, the foundation on which this country was formed — and the farming history of Terawhiti Station, situated on the isolated and wild southern Wellington coast, is no exception.

Terawhiti is a lively account of the people and events which created this well-known pastoral property.

While the text concentrates on the people unique to the station, it also includes a wealth of detail about farming practices and valuers' reports gathered throughout the years.

From the first trek taken around the wild coast by a young Irishman, James McMenamen, through the many disasters and triumphs, Terawhiti's history is rich with memories of those who overcame the remoteness, living and working the land. The shipwrecks along the coastline, the scourge which rabbits brought upon the land, the wild dogs, the finding of gold and much more — all combine to bring to life the past 150 years of this 15,000 acre station.
