As a girl during the Cultural Revolution Sun Shuyun shared a room with her grandmother, hearing her forbidden prayers at night - for her grandmother remained a Buddhist. Later Sun Shuyun retraced the steps of a true Chinese hero, Xuanzang, from China through Central Asia to India - the journey he made to find true Buddhism - and in doing so traversed four landscapes - historical, cultural, spiritual and personal, and gives us a vivid and fascinating insight into China and its people, past and present.
