ARTY BEES BOOKS NEWSLETTER

11th June 2003

Oh, but it is chilly out there isn't it? We live in a great city with theatres, festivals and events but there are definitely some days when one is better off staying home with a good book.

When you do have to venture out, whether for work or play, call by to stock up for those icy winter evenings that we know are coming. What goodies do we have in stock for you? Matt at Bizy Bee's has been going crazy bringing in over 400 new science fiction titles and our very happy customers have been frenziedly snapping them up as soon as they hit the shelves.

Robynne tells us that we can expect more of these imported works and we are always happy to take suggestions for our shopping list. If the new titles aren't to your taste we can offer you 17 boxes of pre-loved SF we recently purchased, straight from the Golden Age, including sci-fi so bad it's got to be good.

But wait, there's more. Jess says to make sure you know that the SF selection at Arty Bees is just as fab and well worth checking out right now. The wonderful thing about second hand bookshops is that you just don't know what is going to come in next. Recent purchases have built up the history sections in both shops with new shelving becoming a necessity to hold it all.

Mountaineers will have a fantastic time at Arty Bees (no, not climbing up to the top shelves). We have an excellent selection of mountain-climbing books. Down the road at Bizy Bees trainspotters are going to love the seven boxes of rail books we have just bought and the kids will have a great time in our bigger and better children's section. Sadly, it's not just our lovely customers who like our fantastic range of books and we have had to smarten up our security measures. Both shops now sport flash silver arches on either side of the doors. These let us know when the ratbags who don't like paying for our books are committing their evil acts.

At Arty Bees we are elevating our desk area to help us keep a watchful eye on any would-be felons, the bonus is that it will get us up to eye level with the friendly faces we do like to see.

The last bit of news is about our recent foray into the literary scene! Yes indeed, back in April we entertained a truly international gathering of Wellington-based poets and writers when we hosted the launch of Michael O'Leary's new book and CD — Toku Tinihanga. At the same event Mark Pirie introduced his latest book of poetry — Dumber. Both books and the CD sold well on the night and we will continue to stock them. We all had a great time and can't wait till we do it again with other writers, so watch this space... Now the only thing left is to introduce myself before I say good-bye — the newest addition to the Bee hive — my name is Miki. You'll recognise me easily enough: the woman with the very short hair giving everyone cheek. Bee seeing you.

— Miki
