A Most Diplomatic General - The Life of General Lord Robertson of Oakridge
Title:
A Most Diplomatic General - The Life of General Lord Robertson of Oakridge
Williamson, David
$48.00

This book catalogues the career of Brian Robertson, the son of the famous Field Marshal Sir William 'Wully' Robertson, who played a pivotal role in his country's history in the middle years of this century. Up until now his achievements have largely been unknown to the world at large, and with this work David Williamson tries to redress that balance. Brian Robertson was not a fighting general who achieved great military victories, but was first and foremost a gifted staff officer and a skilled administrator. He was responsible for masterminding the organisation of supplies during the campaigns in the Western Desert in North Africa and in Italy during the Second World War, a feat which gained him the reputation as an administrator of genius. However, it was his post-Second World War career that saw him become a figure of international significance. From 1945-50 he was first Deputy Military Governor, then Military Governor and finally British High Commissioner in Germany, assisting with the birth of the German Federal Republic in 1948-49 and helping to plan the Berlin Airlift. Subsequently, Robertson was Commander-in-Chief of the British Middle East Land Forces where his diplomatic skills were again brought to the fore as he helped negotiate the terms of the British withdrawal from the Canal Zone in 1953. Brian Robertson ended a career that had begun as a staff officer in the First World War by becoming Chairman of the British Transport Commission, presiding over a major attempt to modernise the railways.
