No-one knows for certain how Aesop's Fables were collected. According to Herodotus, Aesop lived in the region of Amasis, Egypt, in the middle of the 6th century BC. Born a slave, he found favour at the court of King Croesus through his gifts as a storyteller. Such was the delight, amusement and pleasure that he gave, he earned his freedom. He became a traveller visiting Lydia and Greece. No writings by him have survived, but his fables have passed down from his listeners through the ages, and writers well into Christian times have modified and added to them in his name. These simple and easily remembered fables, with their wisdom and sensibility will delight new generations of young readers as they have for over two thousand years...
