The Indigenous Grasses of New Zealand in 3 Volumes
The Indigenous Grasses of New Zealand in 3 Volumes
Buchanan, John
Colonial Museum of New Zealand / George Didsbury, Government Printer, Wellington, 1878-1880. Fair condition. Parts I & II with 21 plates, published in 1878; Parts III & IV with 22 plates, published in 1879; Parts V & VI with 21 plates, published in 1880. All volumes are disbound but plates are present and in good order. Binding is paper covers over plain cardboard. There is age discolouration and general edge-wear to a lot of the pages. These books are from a museum library and are encased in bubble wrap in a box with hand written labels. According to James Hector's Preface in Volume 1, this work was originally intended to be in 5 parts and was published in this large size due to the condition that the plates be nature-printed. He stated that the plate size would be reduced by photo-lithography and that the book would be reproduced in octavo form. This reissue is perhaps The Manual of the Indigenous Grasses of New Zealand, published in 1880?
