Before the Birds and the River - Two Plays for Community Theatre
Before the Birds and the River - Two Plays for Community Theatre
Farrow, Angie
Steele Roberts Aotearoa Publishers, Wellington, 2017,185 pages. The two full-length plays featured in this book were written for the Manawatu Community. Both feature large casts and strong Maori protagonists. 'Before the Birds' explores the importance of place in shaping identity. The play was winner of the Playwrights Association of NZ's Full-Length Play Competition and subsequently won the Bruce Wrenn Award for Contribution to NZ Writing (2010). 'The River' examines issues around the pollution of the Manawatu River. Described by O'Donnell in a scholarly article (RC10) as 'a challenging, ambitious work that stretches the boundaries of community theatre', he continues: 'Farrow (has the) ability to humanise global political crises and to use the symbolism of poetry to promote debate'.
