NZ bird life is quite extraordinary. The native species, isolated for millions of years from the rest of the world, achieved not only a unique character but a total predominance over NZ's natural environment. Then came man; first the Maoris who saw the last of the moa and brought mammals to NZ, then the Europeans, who made fundamental changes in the environment and brought many European birds and animals to their new land.
