Into the Heart of Borneo
Into the Heart of Borneo
O'Hanlon, Redmond
This is a very funny yet informative account of a 1983 journey to the center of Borneo - made by the author, a naturalist; his close friend, the poet James Fenton; and three remarkable native guides. On the one hand it is a classically shaped travel story: a long river voyage into the far interior of a tropical jungle. On the other, it is the side-splitting history of how five intrepid but ill-matched travelers survived the wild boar tick, the river rapids and other hazards of jungle life to reach the very center of Borneo, where they taught the friendly Ukit tribe a new craze - the seven-step disco.
