After the golden days of the late 'forties, the 'fifties brought storm clouds to the bus and coach industry. They affected both the operating and manufacturing sides but it was the latter which felt the effects first. After a period when both chassis and body builders had worked flat-out to meet what seemed like an insatiable appetite for new vehicles, demand dropped sharply. Even so, the 'fifties were primarily a period of rapid bus design development. The bus, despite its impending problems, was very much on top and the tram and trolleybus on the retreat. Here is conveyed a variety of new models and ideas and, conversely, the dramatic shrinkage in the numbers of buys and coach bodybuilders, which make this a fascinating period in the British bus industry...
