Railway Liveries - London Midland and Scottish Railway
The LMSR (London Midland and Scottish Railway) was a huge railway, the biggest of the 'Big Four' created in 1923, and it took time to weld the various constituents of the new company into a cohesive whole. One of the most important contributions towards creating a corporate image was the adoption of a recognisable LMSR livery, which would replace the various colour schemes of the absorbed pre-Grouping companies. Perhaps the LMSR directors were aware that the other three of the 'Big Four' were selecting green, of differing shades, for their locomotives, or perhaps it really was an all-powerful Midland Railway bias, that led them to select the MR crimson as their colour scheme - not only for locomotives but for carriages as well. This book charts the variations in livery chronologically through LMSR's years of operation, 1923-1948, along with coverage of stations and buildings, road vehicles and ships, posters and advertising.
