He followed his father into Mellon Bank, but in 1941 he relinquished all his directorships and set himself a future in philanthropy. He is widely known and admired in the worlds of art, thoroughbred racing and breeding, and environmental protection. These memoirs were a joint endeavor by Paul Mellon's old friend and adviser in matters of art John Baskett.
