
Acores - Azores - As Ilhas Ocidentais - The Western Islands

The archipelago of the Azores, situated in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, is located at a distance of approximately 1500 km from the Portuguese coast and 4000km from New York Cuty. With a total surface area of 600 square kilometres, its highest point, the majestic mountain of Pico, rises 2351 metres above sea level. The nine islands arranged linearly, in a southwesterly to southeasterly direction are connected by a pedestal of basalt, 1500 metres deep, attesting to its volcanic origin. Although similar in many geographical aspects, the islands all have their own characteristics, mainly concerning their way of life. Each exhibit their own specifications, in the diversity of the landscapes, as well as the culture and traditions.
