Sketches from Early New Zealand - Some Nineteenth Century Engravings
Barber, Laurie (introduced by)
While browsing through the famous second-hand bookshops in Hay on Wye, New Zealander James Buchanan came across a rich assortment of illustrations and articles pertaining to New Zealand fro, 19th century illustrated publications. Most of the material was from The Illustrated London News, but also from The Saturday Magazine, The Pictorial Weekly, The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News, The French L'Univers Illustre, and The Graphic. When pieced together this material presents a fascinating picture of the colony of New Zealand, seen through the eyes of middle-class, 19th century Englishmen...Historian Laurie Barber has compiled a thoughtful commentary on the selected engravings. The splendid engravings combined with the commentaries of the day provide us with an intriguing glimpse of early New Zealand as the mother country saw us...
