In the six decades covered by the book Sussex was a county where oxen, gleaners and smocked farm labourers were still to be seen in the fields, where croquet was played in crinolines and stoolball survived, where windmills abounded and a tide mill worked 16 hours a day, where turnpikes interrupted the traffic's flow and in which the London Brighton and South Coast Railway was in its heyday. These are some of the subjects illustrated amongst the 170 photographs, representative of 60 towns, villages and country places, each accompanied by commentaries.
