John Gully, 1819 - 1888, was a major colonial water-colour artist whose paintings have become part of New Zealand's art heritage. Born and brought up in Bath, England, John was successively employed in his early career as a drafting apprentice, a foundery hand, a bank clerk, and a painter in his father's ironmongery. A married and family man he emigrated to New Plymouth in 1852 and lived at Omata.
