On 30 November 1916 a German freighter glided quietly out of Kiel harbour. She looked ordinary enough but beneath that innocent exterior were concealed seven vicious guns and many tons of mines: she was the raider Wolf. Under the captaincy of fearless Karl Nerger, the Wolf set out on a voyage which was to last 15 months and it was as well that her crew were not aware of the hardships ahead. During that period the ship was in constant danger as she cruised through all oceans of the world minelaying and attacking Allied shipping. She suffered food shortages, fire and disease, she ran short of coal and was damaged in coaling; she nearly foundered in a gale; she was covered with ice during her northern trip between Greenland and Iceland. Still she survived to return home triumphant, her hold once crammed with mines now full of prisoners. She had travelled 64,000 miles and destroyed 135,000 tons of Allied shipping...
