In late 2003, the Broadcasting Standards Authority (BSA) commissioned research into the portrayal of Maori and te ao Maori in broadcasting. A team led by Te Kawa a Maui, the school of Maori Studies, at Victoria University of Wellington did a quantitative and qualitative content analysis, analysing broadcasting coverage of the foreshore and seabed issue in the period June to September 2003.
