Of Kapiti, the island, Alistair Campbell wrote in 'Sanctuary of Spirits' from 'Kapiti, Selected Poems,' recalling the attempted invasion of Te Rauparaha's stronghold by other tribes:
'This island is alive with ghosts. Tonight every leaf is an ear.'
Perhaps these spirits join with the birds and the listening leaves to make Kapiti a special place for the few visitors who cross the channel. And for those, the majority, who stay on the mainland, just having the island there is a special bonus. Reflections for the eye and for the mind...
