Suzy, a young, enthusiastic photography student, embarks on an ambitious project, taking her back to her family's neglected East End roots and the ageing Jewish community still there. As she photographs the synagogue's eccentric congregation, she falls under the spell of their charismatic leader, Eli, who captivates her with tales of the area's rich heritage and his own bitter memories.
