Theatre in New Zealand saw many changes in the last quarter of the 20th century. The work of our own playwrights occupied an increasingly significant place on our stages, and indeed provided some of our greatest successes. The public taste for live theatre has grown, and larger and more diverse audiences have extended the capacity of theatrical enterprise. And the numbers of practitioners - actors, directors, designers, technicians and others burgeoned accordingly. In all these areas Circa occupied a pivotal position.
