Theatre is a three-dimensional art, whether Hamlet at the Moscow Art Theatre, Femmes en Folie at the Folies-Bergere, or Peter Grimes at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Yet theatre designers for the most part develop their ideas for sets and costumes in two dimensions - on paper.
