An Inland Voyage was Stevenson's first book, a charming and deliberatley picturesque account of a journey made by canoe along the canals and rivers of Belgium and France. And the same charm and attention to detail are found again in the delightful Travels with a Donkey, which describes a later tour, made this time in the Cevennes in the company of Modestine, a donkey of character. Very different in its setting is The Silverado Squatters, a tender evocation of Stevenson's unconventional honeymoon in a log cabin in an old mining community in the mountains of San Francisco.
