Les Sullivan enlisted in the RAAF in 1942 at the age of 18 and served as a flight rigger and airframe fitter at various training and operational units in Australia until the end of the war. After receiving his BA from the University of Sydney in 1950, Les returned to the RAAF as an Education Officer where his appointments included two years on exchange duty at the RAF School of Education and four years at Headquarters Support Command as Staff Officer Ground Training.
