Journal of Ensign Best 1837-1843
Title:
Journal of Ensign Best 1837-1843
Taylor, Nancy (ed)
$40.00

Government Printer, 1966. Dustwrapper faded and worn, with chips to dustjacket at spine extremities, may have inscription inside from previous owner.

Although intended as a personal record for his family, Ensign Best's journal is a delightful account of his sojourn in Australia, Norfolk Island and New Zealand. His comments are often outspoken and his vivid accounts of exciting and unusual events make pleasant reading. To those interested in an ealier age the racy style and lively comment of this young army officer will re-create the events and personalities of another era. A random selection from the journal yields descriptions of hunting trips and picnics in New South Wales, vice-regal balls in Sydney, a batchelors' party on Norfolk, pig hunting in the Wairarapa, the first race meeting in New Zealand, sailing in Auckland Harbour, the death and burial of Governor Hobson and an expedition from Auckland to Taupo.
Wear on dustjacket and some foxing otherwise great.
