American automakers and consumers alike seemed eager to capitalize on the windfall of new postwar technology and manufacturing capability. The time was ripe for innovation that surpassed mere technology to place a new-found emphasis on style. Influenced by WW2 aircraft, tailfins sprouted and grew, as did streamlined shapes. Chrome, which had first been used - sparingly - in the 1920s, was recognized for its appeal, and designers increasing took a 'more is better' approach. So did engineers who developed ever-larger and more sophisticated engines.
