The Springing of George Blake
Title:
The Springing of George Blake
Bourke, Sean
$20.00

In May 1961 a Foreign Office man named George Blake, who had been serving in Berlin shortly before his arrest, was tried at Old Bailey on five counts of spying for the Soviet Union. He was found guilty and sentenced to the longest term of imprisonment ever imposed under English law - forty-two years. This was more than a third as much as the sentences given to the leaders of the Great Train Robbery gang. At his trial it emerged that Blake had been a double agent for at least nine years and had blown the network of Western secret agents operating on the Continent of Europe and elsewhere. He had, on his own admission, handed to his Russian contacts "every document of any importance that ever came into my hands." This is the remarkable account of how a daring Irishman singlehandedly engineered the escape of Blake from Wormwood Scrubs Prison and spirited him to Moscow...
