The Waikato War 1863-1864
Title:
The Waikato War 1863-1864
Featon, John
$35.00

Capper Press, 1971. Facsimile edition, contains campaign map. Dustwrapper faded on spine. Previous owner's name on front end paper.

A first rate account of the 1863-1864 Waikato War from an on-the-spot reporter, who graphically captures the war atmosphere. Originally published in 1879, with no attempt to provide a balanced view; the author's bias is clearly evidenced throughout and reflects the feeling of the day in a way that no modern author would emulate. The book is full of interesting details derived from the observations of the writers, and of his friends who took part in the war. Major engagements of the colonial militia are described, including the Orakau and Gate Pa battles. This is a facsimile edition, and is missing the sketch map of campaigns. It includes portraits of some of the protagonists and is a rare and authentic account of one of the blacker periods of New Zealand history...
