In a quite remarkable way these diaries, never before published, cover those very years in the long life of John A. Lee that were the most dramatic in outcome and still remain the most intriguing. Need we add they were also the exciting years when Labour first took office, when war broke out in Europe, and when Lee himself was expelled from the Labour Party. Though a prolific writer, Lee had never been a regular diary-keeper and it was almost by chance that he began jotting down a few notes and comments when he and his family moved to Wellington on his taking charge of housing construction for the new government... as the diary habit grew they were continued in notebooks, with daily entries often written right at the heart of affairs in Parliament or caucus...
