The traditional liberal view of schooling ha scome under considerable attack in the preceding decade. The claims that in capitalist democracies the school can educate, ensure social reproduction and promote equality of opportunity in a meritocratic manner based on ability and effort, are in question. This liberal view is examined philosophically but in its historical and sociological contexts
