Escape from imprisonment was Allan Yeoman's overriding experience of the Second World War. After fighting in Greece, he fled the approaching German Army, arriving in Crete for the impending battle. He soon found himself marching across the island to be evacuated on the last ship. After fighting in Egypt and Libya, he was captured and imprisoned in Italy.

He made an audacious escape, only to be recaptured three weeks later. He escaped again, this time from a camp in Austria, and headed for Yugoslavia, where he became attached to a Partisan unit. Free from the Germans, he was not free from the Partisans. On finally breaking away, the Germans tracked him down. Several camps and failed escape plans later, Yeoman was transferred to Brunswick, next to a V2 factory. Here he was to remain to the end of the war, but not without incident.
