The author was the curator of the Bankfield Museum. He wrote extensively on material culture, notably on handmade textiles, including the technology of the Pacific region. This book was one of his most ambitious and comprehensive works, being a detailed study of the techniques of Maori weaving based on a comparative examination of museum specimens.
