Battle for Crete - New Zealand's Near-run Affair 1941
Title:
Battle for Crete - New Zealand's Near-run Affair 1941
Wright, Matthew
$37.00

Intruder Books, 2018.

The battle for Crete was the last act of the Balkan campaign that began in March 1941. New Zealand soldiers arrived in Crete during early May 1941, short of equipment after a hasty evacuation from Greece. Three weeks later, the Germans attacked Crete from the sea and the air. This book takes a fresh look at the New Zealand experience on a remote Mediterranean island two generations ago. It is a 'how and why' history, a search for understanding and context, rather than an attempt to recount 'all the facts' of a battle that also included British, Australian and Greek forces. Throughout the book is a collection of photographs from many sources, many not published before, including pictures taken by Justice Sir John White (PA to Major-General Bemard Freyberg during the campaign), using Freyberg's personal Leica.
