Ursula Bethell (1874-1945) stands, with R.A.K. Mason, at the heart of serious New Zealand poetry. "New Zealand wasn't truly discovered," said D'Arcy Cresswell, "until Ursula Bethell, 'very earnestly digging', raised her head to look at the mountains." Her poetry has been unavailable for thirty years, but this new edition of her poems establishes accurate texts, and includes the entire long poem, "By the River Ashley."
