It will probably never be known to what extent events in Kaikirini shaped the decision to establish a "hot line" between Washington and Moscow. But certainly the party-line telephone system in Kaikirini, a village near NZ's Main Trunk railway line, has it's own place in history.
Party Line is a joyously more complete history of Kaikirini than was possible in the commerical radio version on which it is based. Here are no Freudian undertones; no grim endeavour to explain the complexities of living in this twentieth century. It is simply a happy accounting of what makes most of us tick in NZ... and if Bert Caskey was not the most popular man in Kaikirini, there's a ton of fun for the reader in finding out why.
