The first known woodcut is an image of the Buddha, dating from AD 868. Hans Holbein and Albrecht Durer developed the art in Europe, and Thomas Bewick (1753-1828) established wood engraving in England as a popular illustrative medium for magazines and books. New Zealand has its own tradition of wood engraving, with its most notable practitioner E. Mervyn Taylor.
