In 1934 the Australian sailor and writer Alan Villiers set out to fulfil his life's ambition - to obtain, equip and sail a full-rigged ship around the world, and enthuse others with his own love of sail before the opportunity was lost for ever. He was successful, in the Joseph Conrad, 212 tons, in the years 1934, 1935 and 1936, by way of thew Cape of Good Hope, the South Seas, the East Indies and Cape Horn.
