35 years have now elapsed since a small group of enthusiasts took over the operation of the moribund 2 ft 3 in gauge Talyllyn Railway in Wales; from this beginning the railway preservation movement has prospered. Some lines are operated by private companies or British Rail, but the majority are entirely volunteer efforts.
